The drying of oil-based paints (alkyd, linseed oil, tung oil, and other oxidative cross-linking systems) is essentially the oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids in the oil to form hydroperoxides, which then decompose into free radicals to initiate cross-linking and film formation. A drier (siccative) is not a solvent-evaporation additive that "makes the paint dry"; rather, it is a metal carboxylate catalyst that lowers the activation energy of oxidation—commonly naphthenate or octoate soaps.
The Monocomponent King: Cobalt (Co)

It is the first choice for white and light-colored paints (its purple-red fluorescence is offset by the yellow of the oil, rendering it colorless).
However, using cobalt alone is a double-edged sword: the surface skins over too quickly, preventing oxygen from penetrating inward, which inevitably causes wrinkling and slow through-drying. Therefore, cobalt never works alone in industrial formulations.
Historical Benchmark: Lead (Pb, now retired)
The old "best" was lead-cobalt-manganese compound soap—lead acted as a through-dry auxiliary, providing good hardness and preventing wrinkling. However, due to the toxicity of Pb, it has been phased out globally in paints and coatings, surviving only in historical records of art restoration.

The "best drier system" widely recognized for contemporary oil-based paints is:
Cobalt (primary surface dry) + Zirconium Zr (through-dry auxiliary replacing lead) + Calcium Ca (prevents loss of dry, wetting, storage stability)
Typical metal-to-resin-solid ratios for alkyd paints are approximately Co 0.05–0.1% / Zr 0.3–0.4% / Ca 0.1–0.2%. Zirconium enhances internal curing, hardness, and gloss through coordination cross-linking; calcium prevents premature failure of cobalt and skinning during storage.

- Dark colors/fine art painting oils: Co + Mn (manganese promotes through-drying and performs well at low temperatures, but causes yellowing in white paints)
